The first half of the Packers-Vikings showdown was one-sided for 95% of it, but a late score sparked the Packer’s offense in the second half to at least make it close.
The beatdown the Pack received in the first half meant the candidates for cheese this week weren’t plentiful, but four players ended up being nominated.
As always, Jordan and I handed out their cheeses and added some players to the 2024 Cheeseboard.
Week 4’s candidates
Jayden Reed: 7 catches (8 targets), 139 receiving yards, 1 TD, 1 carry for 2 rushing yards (75.7 PFF grade)
Xavier McKinney: 4 tackles (2 solo), 1 INT and 1 pass breakup (91.0 PFF grade)
Daniel Whelan: 3 punts, 180 yards, longest punt - 74 yardsÂ
Zach Tom: 89.0 PFF grade (highest of all Packers), 2 pressures allowed, 1 hurry and 1 hit allowed
Week 4 cheeses
🧀 Jayden Reed 🧀
As we said on the pod, there is a star beginning to shine bright at 1265 Lombardi Avenue and its name is Jayden Reed. According to the Packers dope sheet, Jayden Reed is the only player in the league since the 1970 merger to post 80+ receptions, 1,000+ receiving yards, 10+ receiving TDs and 200+ rushing yards in his first 20 NFL games. He has solidified himself as WR1 even if Head Coach Matt LaFleur wants to throw up at the mention of the discussion. Reed is sure-handed and brings a tenacity to the team that, in-part, lit the fire under the Packers’ backsides to get them back into the game against the Vikings. Reed is approaching superstar status and the Packers are reaping the rewards of his ascension.
🧀 Xavier McKinney 🧀
Surely he can’t keep this up, right? SURELY. Xavier McKinney has four interceptions through the first four games of the season helping lead the Packers to their league-leading 12 forced turnovers. The best player on the defense, in our mind, is proving that he is worth every penny of that four year, $67 million contract he signed in the offseason. If he keeps this up, he’ll be surpassing Irv Comp’s franchise-leading 10 in one season in no time. More recently, Charles Woodson had nine in 2009. It would be quite the season if he managed that.
🧀 Daniel Whelan 🧀
It has to be pretty dismal for the punter to get a cheese during a week the offense scored 29 points, but that’s just the type of game it was. Whelan has cemented himself as one of the best punters in the league per PFF, ranking as the fifth highest graded punter in their eyes. Against he Vikings he had 3 massive punts. One that got lost in the sun causing Jalen Nailor to mishandle it and cause a turnover, two more that pinned the Vikings back resulting in short drives. Punters are often unsung heroes when it comes to the field position game, but this week, Whelan earned his keep.
