Sal Frelick shines as Brewers lose close series to formidable Atlanta Braves
The Sal Frelick era has arrived!
The Milwaukee Brewers faced the best team in baseball this weekend and they were in every game, but sometimes the other team just wins. The series started with a 6-4 loss that saw Freddy Peralta once again struggle with his command.
The Crew bounced back on Saturday night, thanks in large part to the exhilarating debut of Sal Frelick. His sacrifice fly helped give the Brewers a 4-3 comeback victory. Milwaukee would drop the finale 4-2 after an 8th inning three-run homer from Ozzie Albies.
Next up is the final meeting with Cincinnati Reds this season. The Reds swept the Arizona Diamondbacks over the weekend, bringing them just a half game back of Milwaukee (but the Brewers do own the tiebreaker). Another crucial NL Central series starts tonight.
Master Brewer Leaderboard (through 100 games)
(The Master Brewer Leaderboard is a season-long leaderboard tracking and ranking exceptional performances from Brewers players in the form of Master Brew Points 🍺, which at the end of the season will tally up to crown our Crewsing for a Brewsing Player of the Year.)
Sal Frelick🍺🍺
Welcome to the big leagues, Sal Frelick. It was quite a debut weekend from Milwaukee’s newest rookie standout. Sal finished 4-for-6 at the plate with a walk, two runs scored, and two RBI. The aforementioned sacrifice fly won the Brewers Saturday’s game and he even played outstanding defense in right field. No wonder the crowd already seems to love this guy.
Julio Teheran🍺
Julio Teheran was excellent against his former team. He allowed just a single run on a solo homer across six innings of work. It was a nice return to his early season form and the Brewers will hope he can replicate it next weekend as he is currently slated to face-off against Atlanta again.
Adrian Houser🍺
A three-run homer from Austin Riley was the only damage against Houser on Saturday. He completed six full innings and struck out 10 Braves. By limiting the damage, he kept Milwaukee in the game long enough for Sal Frelick and company to eventually snag a lead and the ballgame.
Bryse Wilson🍺
Bryse Wilson had a stellar, if likely unnoticed, performance this weekend. On Friday he provided three clean innings of relief with five strikeouts. His ERA is down to 2.51 across 46.2 innings pitched.
J.C. Mejia🍺
J.C. Mejia earns his first beer. He was asked to keep the deficit manageable on Friday and Sunday by working the 9th inning in games where the Brewers trailed by two runs. He got the job done both times.
Christian Yelich🍺
Yelich continues his consistent season with solid work against Atlanta. Yelich ended his series 4-for-12 with a double and a run scored.
Brice Turang🍺
Brice Turang has been displaying a bit more patience at the plate. He went 2-for-8 against the Braves with a pair of walks, a run scored, and two RBI. His homer on Sunday tied things up after Milwaukee had gone behind in the previous inning.
