Packers cheeseboard for week 1
The Packers came out of week 1 worse for wear as they lose Jordan Love for a few weeks to an MCL sprain and thankfully no longer as they choose not to place him on injured reserve.
But despite a 34-29 loss, there were bright spots which means it’s time for Jordan and I to hand out cheeses to the players who stood out.
As a refresher, each week my co-host Jordan Treske and I pick candidates for the cheeses and talk through which three out of the candidates earn their cheddar for the week.
Week 1’s candidates
Jayden Reed: 4 receptions, 138 receiving yards, 1 TD; 1 carry, 33 rushing yards, 1 TD on 48 snaps (89.2 PFF grade)
Xavier McKinney: 4 tackles (3 solo), 1 INT for 17 yards and 1 pass breakup on 76 snaps (76.2 PFF grade)
Brayden Narveson: 3-of-4 on FG (Made: 31-yd, 23-yd, 26-yd; Missed: 43-yd), 2-2 XPÂ
Zach Tom: 67 snaps, 0 penalties and 0 pressures allowed on 43 pass blocking snaps (92.0 PFF Grade)Â
Elgton Jenkins: 67 snaps, 0 penalties and 0 pressures allowed on 43 pass blocking snaps (78.4 PFF grade)
Keisean Nixon: 7 tackles (6 solo), 1 sack on 3 pass pressures. Allowed 4 catches on 5 targets for 45 receiving yards, per PFF (65.4 PFF grade)
Edgerrin Cooper: Only 11 snaps, but 11 snaps, 3 tackles and a pass deflection. (85.9 PFF grade, highest grade on defense.)
Week 1 cheeses
🧀 Jayden Reed 🧀
Jayden Reed is an obvious cheese recipient this week, lighting up the stat sheet with 173 total yards and two touchdowns. The sophomore receiver is establishing himself as WR1 — nobody tell Matt LaFleur — among talented teammates as he continues making absurd plays and being a lightning rod for the offense. A fun stat courtesy of @ ZachSSmith59 on Twitter:
🧀 Zach Tom 🧀
Zach Tom’s all-pro season begins with a bang as the second-year starting right tackle logs zero pressures or penalties all while working against Bryce Huff, — the Eagles new acquisition who had 10 sacks last year with the New York Jets. He was the second in PFF grade among right tackles, only behind Charles Cross of the Seahawks. For context, Lane Johnson, who locked up Rashan Gary for most of the game was fifth in PFF grade among RTs. Tom is solidifying himself as one of the league’s best and is a valuable piece of the Packers offensive line.
🧀 Elgton Jenkins 🧀
Meanwhile, the Packers established anchor on the line posted the same impressive line as Zach Tom allowing no pressures and committing no penalties. Except, his assignment was a mix of Jalen Carter, Zach Baun among others. With Rasheed Walker showing some early-season rust at left tackle, EJ maintaining the inside pass rush was critical and will continue to be as Malik Willis gets the start against Indianapolis.
