Make it three series wins from three for the Brewers as they prevail in Pittsburgh
Now that's how you do a road trip
Mark down another series win for our beloved Milwaukee Brewers. The Brewers took two of three games in Pittsburgh against the Pirates to finish off a 7-3 road trip. They had to battle through a bit of adversity to get the job done this time.
Friday’s series opener was always going to be a challenge due to their fatigued bullpen and that proved to be their undoing. Despite a big early lead and a 7-5 lead in the 9th inning, the Brewers fell when struggling reliever Matt Bush blew his save opportunity by allowing a walk-off homer to Carlos Santana. Bush has since been designated for assignment.
Never fear, Corbin Burnes is here! On Saturday, Burnes was perfect through five innings and ended his day with just two runs allowed across seven innings. The offense exploded for 11 runs and The Crew held on for an 11-8 win. Oh yeah, Christian Yelich hit a ball into the river and I saw God.
Sunday’s finale saw the second consecutive quality start from Colin Rea, a go-ahead three-run homer from William Contreras, and some late insurance runs that led to a 6-3 win.
Next up is a welcome return to American Family Field. A four-game series with the Chicago Cubs and a three-game series against the Cincinnati Reds will carry the Brewers into the All-Star break.
Master Brewer Leaderboard (through 84 games)
(The Master Brewer Leaderboard is a season-long leaderboard tracking and ranking exceptional performances from Brewers players in the form of Master Brew Points 🍺, which at the end of the season will tally up to crown our Crewsing for a Brewsing Player of the Year.)
Corbin Burnes🍺🍺
Corbin Burnes gave the Brewers innings when they needed them most. Burnes was perfect through the first five innings, before allowing a pair of runs in the 6th inning. He polished off his day with a perfect 7th inning.
Devin Williams🍺
After watching Matt Bush blow the save on Friday night it was a welcome sight to see what elite backend bullpen work looks like. Devin Williams closing out the game Sunday and being named to the NL All-Star team was a perfect end to the series.
Joel Payamps🍺
The elite backend bullpen work comment also applies to Joel Payamps. Payamps was excellent on Saturday, as he made easy work of the Pirates in the 9th inning to close out the game.
Colin Rea🍺
Make it back to back quality starts for Colin Rea. Rea’s 6.2 innings pitched on Sunday was his most in an MLB start since 2016. Rea is now sporting a 4.40 ERA over 75.2 innings. Not bad for a guy we didn’t expect to feature at all in Milwaukee’s starting rotation.
Christian Yelich🍺
I’ve rambled on about Yeli’s quiet consistency for weeks now, but Christian Yelich hit a baseball into the river so I have nothing rational to say other than “HELL YEAH”. He may not have made the NL All-Star team (yet), but he’s the All-Star of our hearts.
William Contreras🍺
It wasn’t a dominant series at the plate for William Contreras, but his three-run blast on Sunday gave the Brewers an early lead that propelled them to victory. Contreras is arguably Milwaukee’s second most consistent hitter behind Christian Yelich.
Brian Anderson🍺
It was another positive series for Brian Anderson after a few weeks of struggling. BA finished 4-for-11 against the Pirates with a pair of runs scored.
Willy Adames🍺
Who knows how it will progress over the rest of the season, but this series felt like a positive step forward for Willy Adames. He only went 4-for-13 at the plate, but three of those hits were doubles. When Adames provides elite defense and power it’s a winning combination. Finding some sort of consistency at the plate will be crucial as the season winds down.
Raimel Tapia🍺
We speculated last episode that Raimel Tapia would be the odd man out when Sal Frelick is ready for his big league debut, and instead of that happening, Tapia decided to have a dynamite series. He finished the series 3-for-7 with 3 walks and five runs scored.
Owen Miller🍺
Owen Miller played great defense and finished 3-for-10 at the plate against Pittsburgh. On the defensive front, Miller now ranks fifth in Outs Above Average for second basemen.
Andruw Monasterio🍺
The Victor Caratini single game beer award goes to…Andruw Monasterio! Monasterio got the start and batted leadoff on getaway day. Andruw went 2-for-4 with a walk, a run scored, and an RBI.
