Burnes and Hader make the All-Star team, tough times continue as the Brewers drop a series to the Pirates
The All-Star break may provide some much needed rest and relaxation.
The Milwaukee Brewers had an opportunity to take advantage of some weak competition over the last few weeks, but things did not go to plan. Their last three opponents have been the Pirates, the Cubs, and then the Pirates again.
Instead of feasting against these two teams with a combined record of 70-102 they finished the stretch with a 4-6 record. That’s not what you want. A Friday night win was all they had to show for this weekend’s battle with the Pirates.
The other two games featured a Brandon Woodruff gem that they let slip away and a back and forth affair that was put out of reach by a 9th inning homer from former Brewer Daniel Vogelbach.
Adam and Andrew have their therapy session on the missed opportunities and talk Brewer All-Stars.
Master Brewer Leaderboard (through 87 games)
(The Master Brewer Leaderboard is a season-long leaderboard tracking and ranking exceptional performances from Brewers players in the form of Master Brew Points 🍺, which at the end of the season will tally up to crown our Crewsing for a Brewsing Player of the Year.)
Brandon Woodruff 🍺
Big Woo has looked fantastic since coming back from the IL. Despite some struggles at the end, this outing only added to the positive vibes. Woodruff lasted six innings on Saturday with three earned runs allowed and nine strikeouts. If Brad Boxberger had been able to get out of the 7th inning unscathed the numbers would have looked even better, but sometimes baseball is cruel.
Luis Urias 🍺
Luis Urias has been remarkably consistent of late. His batting line of .230/.321/.404 may not be flashy, but it’s good enough for a wRC+ of 104, putting him at an above average level with his offensive production. In this series Urias compiled a 3-for-8 batting line with two walks, three RBI, and a home run.
Willy Adames🍺
Willy’s best moment of the series came with his arm. Adames’ relay throw to Victor Caratini beat Kevin Newman in the 9th inning on Friday night, securing an out at the plate, ending the game with the Brewers ahead 4-3, and preventing a blown save. At the plate Adames went 5-for-13 with two RBI, one walk, and one homer.
Keston Hiura 🍺
Keston Hiura is having what might be the best stretch of his season. His all or nothing approach has shifted, it seems. He’s having better plate appearances and working deeper counts, which is starting to pay off. Against Pittsburgh Hirua finished 4-for-10 with two walks, and one RBI. His season OPS is up to .805.
Hoby Milner 🍺
Hoby Milner’s stellar season lives on. Against the Pirates Milner pitched a pair of scoreless innings with four strikeouts. He didn’t allow a single baserunner and lowered his season ERA to 2.18. Milner is Mr. Consistent.
