Brewers win their third consecutive series, take 2 of 3 games from the Nationals
A sweep would have been better, but the series wins keep coming.
The Milwaukee Brewers continued their trend of taking two out of three games from NL East opponents this weekend.
Friday produced a gem from Eric Lauer and multi-hit days from Christian Yelich, Rowdy Tellez, and Hunter Renfroe. A two-run homer from Tellez in the 6th and five runs in the 8th put the game away for the Brew Crew. Devin Williams and Aaron Ashby each tossed a scoreless inning to follow up Lauer’s seven innings, which locked down the 7-0 win.
The good vibes carried on into Saturday. Led by Andrew McCutchen’s 3-for-5 day and six solid innings from Brandon Woodruff, the Brewers defeated the Nats 5-1. Cutch’s stellar day featured a double and a homer. The Brewers also received a homer from Luis Urías and mulit-hit games from Christian Yelich and Keston Hiura.
Sunday was less fun. After jumping out to a 2-0 lead, the Nationals exploded for six runs in the fourth inning to put the game out of reach. The disaster inning featured eight consecutive hits at one point and two of the runs were scored on bunt singles. The Nationals would ultimately collect an 8-2 win. To make matters worse, Freddy Peralta exited the game in that same fourth inning due to shoulder tightness. Peralta is now headed to the IL.
Master Brewer Leaderboard
(The Master Brewer Leaderboard is a season long leaderboard tracking and ranking exceptional performances from Brewers players in the form of Master Brew Points 🍺, which at the end of the season will tally up to crown our Crewsing for a Brewsing Player of the Year.)
Eric Lauer 🍺
Eric Lauer bounced back from from his toughest outing of the season on Friday. The four runs allowed in Miami now appear as just a blip on the radar of an otherwise exceptional season. Lauer finished his night with seven innings pitched with only five hits and no runs allowed. He added five strike outs as well. Lauer’s efficiency had the Nationals broadcast crew wondering if Craig Counsell would try to squeeze one more inning out of him, but it was not to be.
Hunter Renfroe 🍺
Renfroe reached base six times in the series with five singles and a walk. His on base percentage has climbed back over .300 which is a welcome complement to his power.
Luis Urías 🍺
Urías only played in two games this series, but as usual, he got on base. He finished the series 2-for-7, with two walks, one home-run, one RBI, and two runs scored. He also played well defensively while filling in for Willy Adames yet again.
Rowdy Tellez 🍺
Rowdy only played two games in this series as well, as Craig Counsell opted to give him an off day on Saturday, but he made a positive impact when he was in the lineup. His two-run homer on Friday night broke a 0-0 deadlock, which sparked the Brewers to a comprehensive 7-0 win.
Andrew McCutchen 🍺
It was nice to see Andrew McCutchen back in the lineup after a stint on the COVID-IL. Cutch finished the series 4-for-12, with one walk, one home-run, two RBI, and two runs scored. With him back in the lineup Milwaukee is a step closer to having their preferred everyday lineup available.
