Brewers win series against the Diamondbacks but come up short of a wildcard spot as disappointing season comes to an end
I hope you had the time of your life.
The 2022 MLB regular season has come to an end. The Milwaukee Brewers have finished 86-76 and will miss the playoffs for the first time since 2017. There are plenty of reasons this team didn’t live up to expectations.
Injuries to the starting rotation didn’t help matters, the offense wasn’t quite productive enough, relievers acquired at the trade deadline never found consistency, and the Josh Hader trade sent shockwaves through the clubhouse. We’ll have plenty to talk about this offseason.
The Brewers did at least finish the season with a series win. They won the first two games against the Arizona Diamondbacks before yet another blown save cost them the regular season finale.
Adam and Andrew welcome Jordan Treske to the podcast to recap the series, talk about the season, and give Rowdy Tellez his award.
Master Brewer Leaderboard (through 162 games)
(The Master Brewer Leaderboard is a season-long leaderboard tracking and ranking exceptional performances from Brewers players in the form of Master Brew Points 🍺, which at the end of the season will tally up to crown our Crewsing for a Brewsing Player of the Year.)
Brandon Woodruff 🍺
Brandon Woodruff finished his season with six innings against Arizona where he only allowed a pair of runs. After a tough start to the season, Woodruff turned into arguably Milwaukee’s most reliable starting pitcher down the stretch. Big things are ahead for Big Woo.
Eric Lauer 🍺
Lauer walked four in six innings against the Diamondbacks, but he also allowed no hits, no runs, and struck out seven. His issues with allowing home runs notwithstanding, Lauer turned in a solid season.
Jake Cousins 🍺
2022 was a season marred by injury for Cousins, but he finished with a flourish. Cousins threw two scoreless innings in Wednesday’s 3-0 Milwaukee win to finish his season with a 2.70 ERA in 13.1 innings.
Hunter Renfroe 🍺
Renfroe started the rally that pulled the Brewers back into Monday night’s game. His solo homer gave the team life and it ultimately led to his walk-off single in the 10th inning. Milwaukee has one more year of contractual control on Renfroe before he becomes a free agent. Will he be back in right field next season? Your guess is as good as mine.
Luis Urias 🍺
Luis Urias went 4-for-10 with a homer, a run, and one RBI in his final series of the season. His season started with an IL stint and he never quite found consistency at the plate. What will next year entail? Urias could easily be penciled in as the starting third baseman, starting second baseman, or a utility bench bat depending on what the Brewers do this offseason. I’d expect to see him back in a starting role.
Garrett Mitchell 🍺
Garrett Mitchell closes his first (partial) MLB season with a 3-for-7 series with a walk, one home run, one run, and one RBI. Overall, he finished with a slash line of .311/.373/.459 across 68 plate appearances.
