Brewers take 3 out of 4 in welcome series win in Cincinnati
It was a successful weekend in Ohio.
It was a wonderful weekend for The Brew Crew. The Brewers went into the city that made gross chili famous and won the first three games of a four game series.
An 11th inning nail biter opened the series, followed by a near bullpen meltdown on Saturday where Devin Williams saved the day. Sunday they coasted to a 5-1 win, while Monday’s finale saw them once again struggle against a left-handed starting pitcher.
The Brewers received more contributions from unlikely sources, including Andruw Monasterio and Blake Perkins. Adrian Houser and Julio Teheran pitched gems, most of the bullpen pitched well, and Joey Wiemer showed power and patience.
The Brewers now return home to face the suddenly fearsome Baltimore Orioles, before welcoming the Oakland Athletics to town.
Master Brewer Leaderboard (through 60 games)
(The Master Brewer Leaderboard is a season-long leaderboard tracking and ranking exceptional performances from Brewers players in the form of Master Brew Points 🍺, which at the end of the season will tally up to crown our Crewsing for a Brewsing Player of the Year.)
Adrian Houser 🍺 🍺
Adrian Houser recovered nicely from an unlucky start that went sideways against the Toronto Blue Jays. Houser ended his day with seven innings pitched and he allowed just a single run on a solo homer. The ground-ball specialist that he is, Houser recored 13 of his 21 outs via the groundout.
Joey Wiemer🍺 🍺
Has Joey Wiemer made a permanent adjustment at the plate? It sure seems that way. He went 5-for-12 in the series with three extra base hits and four walks. Power and patience indeed.
Blake Perkins 🍺🍺
Blake Perkins’ return to the Brewers active roster started in a big way. In his first at-bat on Saturday he recorded his first RBI as a big leaguer on a second inning single. He followed that up with a third inning grand slam. Welcome back, Mr. Perkins.
Devin Williams 🍺
Devin Williams entered a rollercoaster ride of a 9th inning on Saturday, as Trevor Megill and Jake Cousins turned an otherwise easy win into a close contest. Despite walking in an inherited runner, Devin closed the door with three strikeouts in the inning to nail down a 10-8 win. He also pitched a scoreless 9th on Friday to send the game to extra innings.
Peter Strzelecki 🍺
Peter Strzelecki is stringing together some of the consistency he showed earlier in the season. Strzelecki tossed a scoreless 8th in Friday’s win and closed out Sunday’s victory.
Julio Teheran 🍺
Take another bow Julio Teheran. Teheran once again was tremendous, with a pair of solo homers being the only real damage he allowed to the Reds. Teheran pitched into the 7th inning before giving way to Hoby Milner and he kept the Brewers within striking distance. Unfortunately the quiet bats led to a 2-0 loss.
Bryse Wilson🍺
Bryse Wilson provided two of the only clean bullpen innings on Saturday, keeping things from going totally crazy after Trevor Megill’s struggles. On Friday night he allowed the Manfred runner to score in the bottom of the 11th, but limited the damage to seal the 5-4 win.
Elvis Peguero 🍺
Elvis Peguero pitched a scoreless bottom of the 10th on Friday night to keep Milwaukee’s chances alive in extra innings. He also notched a scoreless 8th inning on Sunday in relief of Adrian Houser.
Andruw Monasterio 🍺
It’s back to back beers for Andruw Monasterio. His stay in the big leagues looks like it may be extended until he stops hitting. So far he hasn’t stopped. Monasterio finished the series against the Reds 4-for-12 with a couple of walks and his first major league homer.
