Brewers take 3 of 4 from the Rockies in exciting start to the second half
The postseason push is well underway.
When talking about the Milwaukee Brewers it seems like I’m always saying “this series had everything”. Well, this series had everything. This weekend (and Monday), the Brewers won the first three games of the series before dropping the finale to make it three wins out of four games against the Colorado Rockies.
Friday’s series opener ended in dramatic fashion as Luis Urias won the game with a 13th inning walk-off single. Saturday was stress free when a dominant performance from Brandon Woodruff was met with ample run support. Sunday brought more drama, as an 8th inning rally saw the Brewers come back from a late deficit. Monday’s 2-0 loss was no fault of Aaron Ashby, who turned in the best start of his career.
Adam and Andrew recap the series and look ahead to the matchups ahead against the Minnesota Twins and Boston Red Sox. One thing Adam doesn’t know, the next Brewers series sweep will be celebrated by Andrew singing an Elvis song live on the podcast.
Master Brewer Leaderboard (through 97 games)
(The Master Brewer Leaderboard is a season-long leaderboard tracking and ranking exceptional performances from Brewers players in the form of Master Brew Points 🍺, which at the end of the season will tally up to crown our Crewsing for a Brewsing Player of the Year.)
Brandon Woodruff 🍺
Big Woo is big back. Another stellar performance has seen the righty lower his season ERA to 3.73. Woodruff turned in six innings against the Rockies, and allowed just one run with eight strikeouts.
Brent Suter 🍺
Brent Suter joins the Master Brewer leaderboard and he really earned it. Suter pitched in three of the four games and provided four scoreless innings. He even managed to record back to back scoreless innings in the hellish extra inning reality that is Manfred Ball. That is no small feat. Without Suter’s contributions the Brewers likely don’t win this series.
Aaron Ashby 🍺
Right on the heels of signing a brand new contract extension Aaron Ashby delivered the best (and longest) outing of his career. Ashby went seven innings with just a pair of runs allowed and eight strikeouts. Per Curt Hogg of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, “Aaron Ashby's 45 called and swinging strikes tonight are the most by a Brewers pitcher in an outing this year. His 40.5% CSW is also the best of any Brewers starter in 2022.” Sophia Minnaert also noted that five of his nine strikeouts came on his slider.
Luis Urias 🍺
Luis Urias may not have had the flashiest series with the bat, but he recorded some important hits. His walk-off single on Friday night helped the Brewers start the series off with a bang.
Andrew McCutchen 🍺
Cutch was clutch and frequently on base against Colorado. He reached base in every game and recorded at least one hit in three of four games. Of course, McCutchen is added to this list because of his 8th inning double that put the Brewers ahead in Sunday’s back and forth affair.
Rowdy Tellez 🍺
Rowdy Tellez also delivered in crunch time for the Brewers. His 4-for-17 series was highlighted by the 8th inning single that preceded Andrew McCutchen’s go ahead double. If Tellez doesn’t single in the at-bat before to tie the game this series could have taken a very different turn.
Kolten Wong 🍺
It’s been a difficult season for Kolten Wong, marred by injury and inconsistency. However, I have to give credit where credit is due, he’s a professional who is always giving his best effort. Wong went 6-for-16 against Colorado with one double, one walk, four runs scored, and one RBI. If he can continue that type of consistency down the stretch that would be a huge win for the Brewers.
