Brewers take 3 of 4 against the Reds, but every loss continues to hurt the playoff dream
So close, yet so far away.
After 153 games of baseball one thing is clear. The Milwaukee Brewers aren’t going to go down without a fight. For the most part, the team took care of business this weekend in the land of terrible chili.
The Crew won the first three games of a four-game series against the Reds before dropping Sunday’s finale. The series saw great performances from Brandon Woodruff and Corbin Burnes. It also saw power surges from Kolten Wong and Hunter Renfroe, as each homered three times (Wong’s came all in a single game).
Elsewhere in the NL Wild Card race, the Philadelphia Phillies split a four-game series with the Atlanta Braves and the San Diego Padres took two of three games from the Colorado Rockies.
The Brewers are now 1.5 games back of the Phillies and three games back of the Padres. The Brewers and Padres each have nine games remaining, while the Phillies have 10 left.
Adam and Andrew climb down the regular season mountain as the playoffs or an early vacation awaits.
Master Brewer Leaderboard (through 153 games)
(The Master Brewer Leaderboard is a season-long leaderboard tracking and ranking exceptional performances from Brewers players in the form of Master Brew Points 🍺, which at the end of the season will tally up to crown our Crewsing for a Brewsing Player of the Year.)
Kolten Wong 🍺🍺
You could make the case that Kolten Wong is having the best offensive season of his career. His 15 homers and 118 OPS+ are both the highest of his career and the man just keeps raking. On Friday against the Reds, Wong slugged three homers to help The Crew secure a 5-1 win. He basically won the game by himself. Have a day, Kolten.
Hunter Renfroe 🍺
Renfroe also hit three homers against the Reds, albeit his efforts came across two different games. The man this podcast has dubbed “Big Country” snapped a September cold streak by going 6-for-15 with three walks, the aforementioned home runs, six runs scored, and six RBI.
Rowdy Tellez 🍺
Rowdy Tellez quietly extended his lead on our leaderboard with a solid series. Tellez finished 3-for-12 with three walks, one home run, five runs scored, and one RBI.
Brandon Woodruff 🍺
It’s more of a surprise lately if Brandon Woodruff doesn’t provide a dominant start. He did so again against the Reds. Woody went six innings with just two walks, three hits, one run allowed, and 11 strikeouts.
Corbin Burnes 🍺
Both aces were wild this weekend, as Corbin Burnes also turned in a stellar performance. Burnes ended his day with 6.1 innings pitched, two walks, four hits, two runs allowed, and eight strikeouts. It wasn’t his sharpest outing, but it was more than enough for the Brewers in a 10-2 win.
Luis Perdomo 🍺
Luis Perdomo gave the Brewers 3.1 important innings on Friday night. After Eric Lauer failed to make it out of the third inning, Perdomo picked up the slack. He only allowed a single hit, with no walks, and no runs allowed. He’s since been added to the 15-day IL, so if this is our last look at Perdomo for 2022 then it was a damn good one.
Brad Boxberger 🍺
Box has struggled lately, so it was nice to see a return to form. Boxberger tossed two scoreless innings, with one hit, and four strikeouts.
Peter Strzelecki 🍺
Crewsing for a Brewsing is a known pro Peter Strzelecki podcast and he once again showed why. Strzelecki struck out two Reds and allowed no runs across 2.1 innings this series. His most impressive bit of work was getting out of a bases loaded jam on Sunday afternoon. If not for Strzelecki that game could have gotten out of hand much earlier.
