Brewers sweep the Mets by way of grand slams, walk off homers, and rookie thrills
Meet the Mets! Meet the Mets! Come right out and sweep the Mets!
I checked with my sources and it appears that outscoring a World Series contender 19-0 through the first two games of a series is good. That’s what the Milwaukee Brewers did against the highly paid New York Mets in the first two games of their three-game series this week.
But, of course, there would have to be a third and final game. How would they possibly live up to that excitement? Buckle your seatbelts, folks.
Game 3 would end in dramatic fashion. Garrett Mitchell’s 9th inning walk-off homer gave the Brewers the series sweep and sent the fans home happy.
After six games, the Milwaukee Brewers are 5-1 and the 16 inning scoreless streak to start the season feels like a distant memory. Adam and I discuss the magical series and our time spent in Milwaukee.
Master Brewer Leaderboard (through 6 games)
(The Master Brewer Leaderboard is a season-long leaderboard tracking and ranking exceptional performances from Brewers players in the form of Master Brew Points 🍺, which at the end of the season will tally up to crown our Crewsing for a Brewsing Player of the Year.)
Garrett Mitchell 🍺🍺🍺
Mitchell’s three homers were electric and excited the Milwaukee crowd. Most notably his last home run, which was of the walk-off variety, with this Mitchell becomes the first recipient of three beers in one series.
Brian Anderson 🍺 🍺🍺
But wait! Another three beer recipient has arrived. Brian Anderson also homered three times against the Mets, but he also compiled nine RBI across three games. That’s worth half a six pack.
Brice Turang 🍺 🍺
A home debut? A grand slam? Yep, that will get you a couple of beers. Brice Turang is fitting into this Brewers lineup nicely thanks to his patience and speed combination (not to mention he’s showing some power). His flawless defense at second base has also been a much needed contribution. Small sample size caveat, but it looks like the Brewers have an assortment of Rookie of the Year candidates and Turang is definitely one of them.
Joey Wiemer 🍺
Joey Wiemer plays baseball 100 miles per hour all the time and the fans in Milwaukee already love it. Wiemer’s homer Wednesday was as exciting as his outfield assist on Monday. He also added a diving catch for good measure while getting the start in center field during the series finale. Offense? Yep. Defense? Yep. Wiemer does it all.
Jesse Winker 🍺
Why do we like Jesse Winker? Because he gets on base! Winker’s command of the strike zone has been impressive thus far this season. He finally showcased his power in Game 3 against the Mets, as his two RBI double got the Brewers back into the game after a shaky performance from Corbin Burnes.
Willy Adames 🍺
Willy Adames seems to be bouncing back from his slow start to the season. He had a hit in Game 1, two hits in Game 2, and two walks in Game 3 of the series against the Mets. The man got on base, and as you all know, we like when guys get on base.
Freddy Peralta 🍺
Fastball Freddy’s first start of the season was an absolute gem. Peralta tossed six scoreless innings with two hits allowed, three walks, seven strikeouts, and no runs. It’s great to see him healthy after a tumultuous 2022 season that was riddled by injuries.
Wade Miley 🍺
Let’s party like it’s 2018! Wade Miley is back in Milwaukee and it’s a beautiful thing. Miley’s return to Milwaukee saw him flummox the Mets. Wade pitched six scoreless innings while leading The Crew to a 9-0 victory.
Bryse Wilson 🍺
It wasn’t flashy, but Bryse Wilson did his job during the home opener. Wilson’s three innings to follow Freddy Peralta closed out the game, ensuring the rest of the bullpen would get some time off after a busy series against the Cubs. Wilson’s long relief ability could prove valuable over the course of 162 games.
Hoby Milner 🍺
Hoby Milner did what Hoby Milner does. He pitched 2.2 innings of scoreless baseball and the Brewers won both the games in which he pitched. The reliable lefty just gets the job done.
Peter Strzelecki 🍺
It was another stellar series out of the bullpen for Peter Strzelecki. He fired two innings of scoreless baseball as he continues to establish himself as an arm that be trusted in nearly any relief situation.
Devin Williams 🍺
Devin only pitched once this series, but it was a stressful inning. He entered with the score tied 6-6 during Wednesday’s series finale. Without his dominance in the top of the 9th inning Garrett Mitchell’s walk-off wouldn’t have been possible.
