Brewers split epic series with the Cubs filled with highest highs and lowest lows
My pulse has finally returned to normal
My favorite Twitter account to follow is MLB stats and research expert Sarah Langs. At the end of games where the win probability shifts drastically in the late innings she’ll often tweet the graph of that game with the caption “wheeee!”. This series had some whacky graphs. Sarah is also bravely living with ALS, you can donate to Project ALS at the hyperlink.
The Brewers took game one in dramatic fashion, coming all the way back from a 6-0 deficit to win 8-6. If you haven’t seen the highlight of Jahmai Jones’ first pitch double do yourself a favor and go watch it. Milwaukee lost the second and third games of the series in brutal fashion, but they wouldn’t let that carry over into the final game of the series.
They closed out the series with a 6-5 win that was highlighted by a Christian Yelich three-run homer and a Victor Caratini game winner. It was a series split that felt fair. Next up is three games against the still red hot Reds. After that, we will have finally reached the All-Star break.
Master Brewer Leaderboard (through 87 games)
(The Master Brewer Leaderboard is a season-long leaderboard tracking and ranking exceptional performances from Brewers players in the form of Master Brew Points 🍺, which at the end of the season will tally up to crown our Crewsing for a Brewsing Player of the Year.)
Christian Yelich🍺🍺
I don’t care what anyone else thinks, Christian Yelich is a damn All-Star. Am I overreacting? Maybe, and he’ll probably make it as an injury replacement, but I want to shout it from the top of a mountain anyway. Yelich gets double the beers for impact and volume in this series. He finished the series 8-for-17 with two walks, a double, a homer, seven runs scored, and five RBI. IS HE BACK?!?! Sorry, I had to say it.
Joel Payamps🍺🍺
Joel Payamps is on an incredible run. He threw a scoreless inning in three of the four games this week, which gives him 11 consecutive appearances without allowing an earned run. Speaking of All-Star level performances…
Elvis Peguero🍺
The King was at it again. Peguero had two scoreless outings against the Cubs, one of which came in the 10th inning. He has a knack for not allowing the zombie runner to score and it is much appreciated.
J.B. Bukauskas🍺
This trip to Milwaukee was short lived for J.B., but he had a good showing in his Brewers debut. Bukauskas tossed a pair of scoreless innings before being sent back to Nashville. I imagine we’ll see him again at some point.
William Contreras🍺
It’s safe to say William Contreras has lived up to expectations this season. Through 68 games, he’s hitting .255/.342/.425 with nine homers and 32 RBI. Couple that with elite pitch framing and you’ve got yourself one heck of a starting catcher.
Willy Adames🍺
Willy Adames continues to trend in the right direction, especially when it comes to his power hitting. Adames had a double and a homer this week while driving in five runs. He added a pair of walks for good measure and the Brewers will hope that power and patience is the theme of Willy’s second half.
Victor Caratini🍺
My dear friend Adam McGee said to me the other day “we don’t appreciate Victor Caratini enough.” I agree! Caratini is the perfect backup catcher for this team and that has been crucial at times this season. Caratini’s solo shot on Thursday helped the Brewers secure a 6-5 win in the series finale.
Jahmai Jones🍺
Welcome to Milwaukee, Jahmai Jones! His pinch hit double on Monday tied the game at six as The Crew clawed all the way back from a 6-0 deficit. It was the moment of the season so far. Jones finished the week 2-for-4 with a walk, the aforementioned double, three RBI, and one run scored.
Andruw Monasterio🍺
Andruw Monasterio keeps earning a spot on this roster. That’s the life of a fringe MLB player, fighting everyday to keep your spot on the team. I’m finding it pretty impressive. Monasterio finished this series 3-for-5 with a walk and a run scored.
