Brewers slam their way to another series win over Craig Counsell’s Cubs
Fly the L all the way back to Chicago
Craig Counsell’s Chicago Cubs visited American Family Field this weekend and were sent back to Chicago (and Whitefish Bay) with another series loss. Friday’s game-defining moment was Jackson Chourio’s 4th inning grand slam that turned a 2-0 deficit into a 4-2 lead. Elvis Peguero, Jared Koenig, and Trevor Megill followed Colin Rea’s 5.1 innings of work with 3.2 innings of scoreless relief to nail down the win.
The Brewers dropped Saturday’s game after an Ian Happ two-run homer off of Joel Payamps broke a 3-3 tie in the top of the 8th inning. The Brewers got a pair of runners on in the bottom of the 9th, but they were unable to bring any runs to the plate, giving Chicago a 5-3 win.
Sunday’s finale saw the return of the dominant version of Freddy Peralta we’ve all been longing to see. Peralta allowed a solo homer to Nico Hoerner to start the game, but he would not allow anything else across seven outstanding innings. Brice Turang’s 4th inning grand slam capped off a seven-run inning, which stretched the Brew Crew lead to 7-1. Turang’s slam was the final bit of offensive damage either team would inflict, sending the Cubs home with a 7-1 loss.
The Brewers are off to Denver for four games against the Colorado Rockies to start July, let’s see if Milwaukee can pile up some wins in the Rocky Mountains.
