Brewers secure series win against rival Cardinals, Ashby undergoes shoulder surgery, Chourio becomes the Crew's first top MLB prospect
The baseball in Milwaukee is very fun!
The Milwaukee Brewers have won another series to start the 2023 MLB season and the vibes are immaculate. The Crew are 7-2 and find themselves with the best record in the National League.
This weekend’s opponent was the division rival St. Louis Cardinals. The series was bookended by a pair of wins, the only blemish coming via a 6-0 loss on Saturday. It’s never not fun to win a series against the Cardinals.
Milwaukee now faces a daunting road trip out west. First up is three games with the Arizona Diamondbacks, followed by four games with the San Diego Padres, and concluding with three games against the Seattle Mariners. Let the late night baseball commence!
Master Brewer Leaderboard (through 9 games)
(The Master Brewer Leaderboard is a season-long leaderboard tracking and ranking exceptional performances from Brewers players in the form of Master Brew Points 🍺, which at the end of the season will tally up to crown our Crewsing for a Brewsing Player of the Year.)
Willy Adames 🍺🍺
Willy Adames has rounded into form after a slow start. Against the Cardinals, Adames slugged two homers, a double, scored four runs, and drove in four runs. He’s also playing stellar defense while helping the Brewers lead the league in Defensive Runs Saved to start the season.
Christian Yelich 🍺
Yelich has had a strange start to the season. He’s striking out in 31 percent of his plate appearances, but he has compiled a .381 on-base percentage. If some semblance of power returns to his game then Yelich can still have a positive impact on this team. Even if it doesn’t, the on-base skills at the top of the order will be helpful.
William Contreras🍺
William Contreras wins the first head to head matchup against his brother Wilson this season. Contreras had four hits, a pair of walks, and threw out a baserunner attempting to steal second base. Contreras has settled in nicely to Milwaukee, the only remaining element to his game fans are still waiting to see is hitting for more power.
Brandon Woodruff 🍺
Woodruff’s day ended a little earlier than anticipated on Friday, but he still turned in a respectable effort. Woodruff threw 5.1 scoreless innings with four strikeouts before giving way to Joel Payamps. The Brewers have won both Woodruff starts this season.
Freddy Peralta 🍺
Freddy Peralta looks healthy to start his 2023 campaign and that has been a sight for sore eyes after his injury plagued 2022. Per Adam McCalvy, Sunday against St. Louis Peralta’s average fastball velocity and maximum fastball velocity were both the highest of his career. Fastball Freddy turned in six innings of work with only a single run allowed and seven strikeouts.
Gus Varland 🍺
The Gus Bus remains perfect. Varland’s 2.2 scoreless innings now give him 4.2 innings without allowing a run for his season (and his career). Matt Arnold may have uncovered a hidden gem in Varland.
Joel Payamps 🍺
It got scary at times, but Joel Payamps managed to work his way out of trouble in this series. Payamps worked around one walk and three hits to conclude his series with 1.2 scoreless innings pitched.
Bryse Wilson 🍺
Bryse Wilson’s ERA remains 0.00 after he closed out Friday’s game with a scoreless 9th inning. Wilson has shown an ability to work multiple inning and single inning stints so far this season.
Hoby Milner 🍺
He didn’t even pitch a full inning of this series, but context is key for Mr. Milner. He inherited four baserunners and didn’t allow any of them to score. That includes getting out of Matt Bush’s bases loaded jam unscathed on Sunday.
Peter Strzelecki 🍺
Another day, another scoreless outing for Strzelecki. He currently leads the bullpen in innings pitched with five and has yet to allow a run.
Devin Williams 🍺
A scoreless 9th inning from Devin secured Sunday’s victory without stress. He hasn’t had to work many high stress innings yet this season, but he’s been as reliable as ever when called upon.
