Brewers make it back to back road series wins as they take 3 of 4 against the Mets
More bites at The Big Apple
The New York Mets have been kind to the Milwaukee Brewers so far this season. The Brewers swept the Mets in their home-opening series back in April and now they’ve taken three of four games in the city so nice they named it twice.
The Brewers took Monday’s opener 2-1 behind a solid start from Colin Rea and a Joey Wiemer homer. Tuesday’s loss featured the first tough outing for Julio Teheran. Wednesday and Thursday saw a 5-2 win aided by late insurance runs driven in by Christian Yelich, followed by a 3-2 comeback win.
The Brewers are now level in the NL Central with the Reds as they try to take control of this division race. Next up they’ll finish off the road trip with a trip to Pittsburgh to face the Pirates, old friend Andrew McCutchen, and maybe even people dressed up in animal costumes.
Master Brewer Leaderboard (through 81 games)
(The Master Brewer Leaderboard is a season-long leaderboard tracking and ranking exceptional performances from Brewers players in the form of Master Brew Points 🍺, which at the end of the season will tally up to crown our Crewsing for a Brewsing Player of the Year.)
Devin Williams🍺🍺
Devin Williams is running away with things! What can we say, the man does his job extremely well. Williams recorded three saves in the series, with two of them coming in one run games. Thursday’s finale got a little scary, but Devin knows how to pitch himself out of a jam.
Joel Payamps🍺
Joel Payamps has a stranglehold on a high leverage role for the foreseeable future. It’s not just because Matt Bush and Peter Strzelecki have struggled, Payamps has turned himself into one of the better relievers in the National League.
Elvis Peguero🍺
.The same goes for Elvis Peguero who has become a reliable option late in games thanks to his devastating sinker/slider combination. The highlight of his series was Peguero using that sinker to induce an inning ending double play against Starling Marte in Thursday’s series finale.
Hoby Milner🍺
Hoby Milner is in need of a well earned rest. Sure, he’s made a lot of appearances lately, BUT he also helped some Brewers players navigate the subway system after the team bus got stuck in traffic. You can’t teach that kind of leadership.
Bryse Wilson🍺
The last of the brilliant bullpen arms to get a beer this series is Bryse Wilson. Wilson threw 2.2 scoreless innings across the four games. With the other four guys likely needing a day off we could see some High Leverage Bryse on Friday against the Pirates.
Colin Rea🍺
Colin Rea Day was wonderful this week, as the journeyman right-hander got the series off to a great start. Rea dueled Justin Verlander step for step (or maybe even a step further), throwing 6.1 scoreless innings and allowing just one run in a 2-1 Brewers win.
Adrian Houser🍺
Adrian Houser’s return to the rotation went well. After Hoby Milner led him through the New York public transit system, Houser scattered seven hits and one walk while allowing just a pair of runs on solo homers. It was the rollercoaster ride that Adrian Houser starts often are, but he got the job done.
Christian Yelich🍺
More quiet consistency from Christian Yelich. He reached base in every game and reached base multiple times in three of the four games. His stats are starting to look like they did in 2017 (the season before he was acquired from the Miami Marlins).
Jesse Winker🍺
It was a solid series for Jesse Winker, which have been hard to come by this season, but we’ll take what we can get. Winker finished the week 4-for-11 with a walk, a double, one run scored, and two RBI.
Owen Miller🍺
It’s a return to the big board for Owen Miller after some absences. Miller built off of his revenge series against his former team to put together a quality performance against the Mets. He finished the series 4-for-12 with a pair of walks, a double, and a run scored.
Victor Caratini🍺
SINGLE GAME VICTOR CARATINI. The man did what he does best this series, which is play in just one game and absolutely deliver. Caratini started Thursday’s contest and went 2-for-3 with a walk, a single, a homer, two RBI, and one run scored. Well done, sir.
Brian Anderson🍺
Brian Anderson has had a rough go of it lately at the plate, but he came up with a huge sacrifice fly on Thursday and mixed in a few hits so we’ll hand him a beer.
Brice Turang🍺
It’s a welcome back beer for Brice Turang! Turang went 1-for-4 with a double in his return, but he’s on this list for his stellar defensive work. His diving grab and subsequent throw saved a run early in the game, which given the state of the Brewers offense, was vital.
