Brewers lose series to Mets after Game 2 collapse, path to playoffs requires no more mistakes
The thing about time is that sometimes it runs out.
Two weeks from now we won’t be talking about regular season baseball anymore. The regular season will have just ended and 12 teams (wow that seems like too many) will be looking forward to the postseason. Everyone else will be thinking about the offseason. Which category will the Milwaukee Brewers be in?
This week’s series against the New York Mets was another series where an opportunity was missed. Monday night saw Max Scherzer dominate in a 7-2 Mets win. Tuesday the Brewers let one slip away. With a 4-3 lead in the top of the 7th, Taylor Rogers walked the bases loaded and allowed a grand slam to Francisco Lindor. That turn of events resulted in a 7-5 Mets win.
The Brewers managed a win in the finale thanks to great work from Adrian Houser and the bullpen. The 6-0 win keeps hope alive for a playoff appearance. The Brewers now trail the Phillies by 2.5 games and the Padres by four games. No more margin for error remains.
Adam and Andrew recap the series loss to the Mets and discuss the hourglass running out of sand.
Master Brewer Leaderboard (through 149 games)
(The Master Brewer Leaderboard is a season-long leaderboard tracking and ranking exceptional performances from Brewers players in the form of Master Brew Points 🍺, which at the end of the season will tally up to crown our Crewsing for a Brewsing Player of the Year.)
Peter Strzelecki 🍺
Strzelecki continues to show why he will likely be a huge factor for the 2023 Milwaukee Brewers. Against the Mets he threw 2.2 scoreless innings with no hits, 1 walk, and three strikeouts.
Hoby Milner 🍺
Milner has continued to perform well after some midseason struggles. Across two innings pitched, Milner didn’t allow a run and struck out one Met. His solid effort had many Brewers fans wishing we’d seen “High Leverage Hoby” in the 7th inning of Tuesday night’s game.
Brent Suter 🍺
Everyone’s favorite author/relief pitcher Brent Suter also contributed to the bullpen success. Suter’s two innings of scoreless work included one strikeout, one walk, and no hits allowed.
Jake Cousins 🍺
Keep the bullpen accolades coming! Jake Cousins returned from the IL this week and provided 2.1 innings of relief work. These innings included a walk, a hit, and a hit by pitch, but Cousins managed to escape the traffic without allowing a run.
Willy Adames 🍺
Willy Adames has been the Brewers best player over the last few weeks and it hasn’t been particularly close. That was the story against the Mets, Adames ended the series 5-for-11 with two walks, two doubles, one homer, two runs, and two RBI.
Mike Brosseau 🍺
Brosseau only got one at-bat in this series, but he made it count. Brosseau’s Grand Slam in Game 3 gave the Brewers some much needed insurance runs in their 6-0 win. This is Brosseau’s first beer of the season which feels like a flaw in our scoring system. We’re sorry, Bross.
Andrew McCutchen 🍺
McCutchen only played in the first two games of this series, but he provided some much needed production with the bat. Cutch finished his two-game stint 3-for-6 with with two walks, one double, one run, and one RBI.
