Brewers lose a series in Arizona as Brandon Woodruff misses a start for what will hopefully be the minimum IL spell
You can't win them all.
I guess the Milwaukee Brewers aren’t going to win every series they play this season. Oh well, that’s baseball. The Brewers traveled to Phoenix this week to take on the up and coming Arizona Diamondbacks.
Game 1 ended in a 3-0 loss thanks to the stellar outing from Diamondbacks ace Zac Gallen. Umpire Scott Barry gave him some help, but Gallen was excellent nonetheless. Wade Miley’s respectable effort kept the Brewers in the game, but you can’t win a baseball game if you score no runs. That’s science.
A Corbin Burnes return to form helped secure a 7-1 win in Game 2, but Arizona would capture the series win with an afternoon victory on Wednesday. Brandon Woodruff’s trip to the injured list saw Janson Junk make his Brewers debut in what would end up as a 7-3 loss.
The Brewers head to San Diego next before wrapping up this road trip in Seattle.
Master Brewer Leaderboard (through 12 games)
(The Master Brewer Leaderboard is a season-long leaderboard tracking and ranking exceptional performances from Brewers players in the form of Master Brew Points 🍺, which at the end of the season will tally up to crown our Crewsing for a Brewsing Player of the Year.)
Corbin Burnes 🍺🍺
That’s the Corbin Burnes we know and love. Burnes was downright dominant against the Diamondbacks. Burnes fired eight scoreless innings with no runs allowed and eight strikeouts. For awhile it looked like he was on track for a complete game, but Craig Counsell correctly proceeded with caution with a seven run lead.
Bryse Wilson 🍺
Bryse Wilson continues to pile up beers thanks to him reliably filling his role. Wilson pitched a pair of scoreless innings in relief of Wade Miley, keeping the Brewers within striking distance against Zac Gallen.
Javy Guerra 🍺
Javy Guerra added two more scoreless innings to his ledger for the season. After a tough outing in Chicago damaged his overall numbers, he has now lowered his ERA to 2.84 across 6.1 innings.
William Contreras🍺
William Conteras showcased his pitch framing skills in two starts behind the plate against Arizona. He put on a strike stealing display as he is, so far, yet another case study on how well the Brewers develop catchers. A catcher’s interference and throwing error Wednesday showed that there are still growing pains to be worked out, but that is to be expected. He also went 4-for-7 at the plate with a double as he continues to display great bat to ball skills.
Garrett Mitchell 🍺
Garrett Mitchell moves to the top spot of the Master Brewer Leaderboard with another solid series. In 109 plate appearances as a big league player, Mitchell now boasts a .313/.370/.525 slash line. The strikeout rate is still something to monitor, but so far it seems like the Brewers have something special in Mitchell.
Mike Brosseau 🍺
Mike Brosseau had a hot spring, but was struggling to start the regular season. This series saw him round back into form. Brosseau finished the series 3-for-7 with four RBI.
