Brewers finish strong to split series with the Pittsburgh Pirates
A series split takes the Brewers home to Milwaukee after a 5-2 road trip
The week got off to a shaky start for the Milwaukee Brewers, but they rebounded to split a four-game series against the Pittsburgh Pirates. Monday saw the Brewers get bad injury news about Wade Miley and then Jakob Junis got him by a ball in batting practice. When it rains it pours.
Pirates ace Jared Jones added to the pain by dominating the Brewers over six innings. The Pirates bats did just enough (with help from some poor defense) to win 4-2.
Game 2 saw more pain. Bailey Falter pitched into the 8th inning and all the Milwaukee lineup could muster was a Gary Sanchez solo homer. The one bright spot was the excellent debut from rookie starting pitcher Tobias Myers, as he went five innings and allowed just a single run. Pittsburgh eked out a 2-1 win.
Game 3 was the get right game. Bryse Wilson pitched into the fifth in spot start duty and the Brewers bullpen followed with 4.2 innings of scoreless relief. The Crew scratched together a three-run third inning on a William Contreras single, a Rhys Hoskins hit by pitch, and a Blake Perkins walk. That was enough to secure a 3-2 victory.
Game 4 was a back and forth affair that felt like a rollercoaster ride. Or snorting hot sauce off of a frying pan. Something stressful, I don’t know. Freddy Peralta didn’t have his best command and couldn’t make it out of the fifth inning. Never fear, Gary Sanchez is here.
With an 0-2 count, Sanchez crushed an Aroldis Chapman 102 mph fastball into the right-field stands to give the Brewers a 6-5 lead in the bottom of the 8th inning. Oliver Dunn’s single in the 9th added another insurance run and Trevor Megill recorded his first career save in a 7-5 series splitting triumph.
Next up the Brewers return home to host the New York Yankees.
