Brewers finish off red-hot week with series win over Red Sox, plus Joey Gallo, Ramon Laureano and latest trade deadline buzz
The Brew Crew are now 7-2 since the All-Star break.
The Milwaukee Brewers look like a team on a mission right now. Since losing three of four games going into the All-Star break, they have won seven of their last nine games and have extended their lead in the NL Central to three games over the St. Louis Cardinals.
This past weekend saw them travel to Boston to take on the Red Sox at historic Fenway Park. Brandon Woodruff’s dominant outing started the positive momentum, leading the Brewers to a 4-1 win.
Saturday the bats came alive, especially late, resulting in a 9-4 victory. The series finale would slip away during a disastrous 5th inning, the Red Sox would win 7-2, but overall it was another step in the right direction for a Brewers team with high aspirations.
Adam and Andrew chat about the series, Fenway Park, more trade rumors, and the impending return of Freddy Peralta.
Master Brewer Leaderboard (through 102 games)
(The Master Brewer Leaderboard is a season-long leaderboard tracking and ranking exceptional performances from Brewers players in the form of Master Brew Points 🍺, which at the end of the season will tally up to crown our Crewsing for a Brewsing Player of the Year.)
Rowdy Tellez 🍺
Rowdy didn’t wrap a homer around Pesky’s Pole like I predicted, but he had a solid series. His 3-for-12 batting line was enhanced by three walks, he also added a run scored and an RBI. Something of note, all the walks were intentional. Pitch to Rowdy, you cowards!
Christian Yelich 🍺
The toe tap looks like it’s here to stay. Yelich’s new approach at the plate has him getting on base with regularity and for extra bases. Against the Sox, Yelich finished the series 6-for-14 with two walks, two doubles, two runs, and one RBI.
Hunter Renfroe 🍺
Why did the Red Sox trade Hunter Renfroe? It’s something that will never make sense. Renfroe made his old team look foolish in this series. Renfroe went 5-for-13 with two homers, two runs, and four RBI. His 19 homers have him just one off the team lead despite all his time missed due to injury.
Tyrone Taylor 🍺
Taylor was only 2-for-9 at the plate, but he added a pair of walks, a hit by pitch, two runs, and two RBI. All the trade deadline chatter surrounding the Brewers is centered around the team upgrading in centerfield. If Taylor can reliably get on base at a higher clip than his current OBP, then perhaps they won’t need to upgrade.
Brandon Woodruff 🍺
On most other pitching staffs around the big leagues Brandon Woodruff would be considered the ace. He’s certainly pitching like an ace since coming off of the IL. Against the Red Sox, Woodruff allowed just one run over 6.1 innings while striking out nine. In 30 innings in July, Woodruff compiled a 2.10 ERA with an 11.4 strikeouts per nine.
Devin Williams 🍺
Devin Williams has decided to never allow runs ever again. I can get on board with that. Williams pitched another pair of scoreless innings this series, bringing his streak to 28.2 innings in a row without allowing a run. It’s been incredible to witness.
