Brewers finish homestand with series win over Pirates, calendar turns to September
Baseball was played, the Brewers won two games.
August is over and a huge September stretch looms for the Milwaukee Brewers. The Crew are still chasing the San Diego Padres and Philadelphia Phillies, despite winning two of three games against the Pittsburgh Pirates.
They bookended the series with wins in Game 1 and Game 3. However, it was another series that they could have swept, but batting and bullpen troubles on Tuesday led to a late 4-2 loss. That being said, a series win is better than a series loss, but sweeps are becoming more and more necessary given they chase ahead of them.
Numac, host of GSPN’s Green Bay Packers podcast “Talk of the Tundra”, joins Adam and Andrew to talk about the series win and look forward to what autumn will bring.
Master Brewer Leaderboard (through 129 games)
(The Master Brewer Leaderboard is a season-long leaderboard tracking and ranking exceptional performances from Brewers players in the form of Master Brew Points 🍺, which at the end of the season will tally up to crown our Crewsing for a Brewsing Player of the Year.)
Hunter Renfroe 🍺
Big Country hit a lot of singles this week. His 6-for-11 batting line included five singles, two walks, a double, two runs, and two RBI. This recent stretch of contact hitting (albeit hard contact even when the hits aren’t going for extra bases) has improved his triple slash line to .258/.322/.507.
Keston Hiura 🍺
Keston Hiura’s flair for the dramatic remains in tact. Monday night’s game came down to Keston in the batter’s box against Will Crowe. Hiura proceeded to send a fly ball just barely over the left field wall to give the Brewers a 7-5 win.
Kolten Wong 🍺
The Brewers have a decision to make on Kolten Wong this offseason. They hold a player option with a $2 million buyout and there has been speculation by fans and media alike about what the team will ultimately decide. With his play lately, it seems clear that Wong should be back with the Brewers in 2023.
Garrett Mitchell 🍺
Welcome to the big leagues, Garrett Mitchell! Milwaukee’s new centerfielder put on a show for the local fans this week. He walked and stole a base on Monday night, but he saved his best for when the Brewers needed it most. His first career homer in the bottom of the 8th tied things up at 5-5, paving the way for Keston Hiura’s walk-off home run.
Jason Alexander 🍺
Pressed into an impromptu start, Jason Alexander delivered the goods just like he did in his early season appearances. Alexander tossed five innings, allowing just a single run and struck out six Pirates (a career high). With Adrian Houser shifted to the bullpen, it looks like Alexander will continue to start until Aaron Ashby returns.
Freddy Peralta 🍺
One start after throwing six no hit innings, Freddy Peralta returned to the mound. His velocity was down, which is definitely something to monitor moving forward, but he still pitched well. Peralta ended his day with just one run allowed across five innings.
Brent Suter 🍺
Brent Suter has quietly been Milwaukee’s best reliever for the last few weeks. Two more scoreless innings against Pittsburgh has lowered his season ERA to 3.42. That’s his lowest ERA mark since Opening Day.
