Brewers drop a series to the Pirates with welcome All-Star break looming
Paul the Pirate has made quite the impression.
This week brought a tough, but winnable, series to the Milwaukee Brewers as they battled their NL Central rival the Pittsburgh Pirates. Tuesday’s series opener was a slugfest. Well, it was a slugfest for the Pirates. They hit five homers in a 12-2 win.
Murph’s Mashers returned the favor in Wednesday’s contest. Nine runs and eight shutout innings from Tobias Myers evened up the series at one win each. Myers’ continued development (and dominance) remains one of the highlights of the first 94 games of the season.
Thursday’s afternoon finale gave the Brewers their first look at rookie sensation Paul Skenes. Despite the Brewers putting together some long at-bats early in the game, Skenes was as dominant as advertised.
He logged seven hitless and scoreless innings before giving way to Colin Holderman in the 8th inning. A Yasmani Grandal RBI double in the 7th was the only blip on the radar for Aaron Civale, but it was enough to give the Pirates a 1-0 win.
Next up, the Brewers will welcome the Washington Nationals to town before the All-Star break begins. The guys deserve some rest after a hard fought “first half”.
