The Milwaukee Brewers faced a bit of a setback this weekend. Coming off a sweep of the Cincinnati Reds and eight wins in their last nine games, the Brew Crew dropped two of 3 games against the defending world champion Atlanta Braves.
Friday saw them start the series off on the right foot with a 6-3 win. Eric Lauer went 6 and 1/3 innings pitched delivering eight strikeouts and only allowing a pair of runs (one earned). The Brewers scored runs on a Rowdy Tellez double, a Lorenzo Cain fielder’s choice, a Willy Adames bases loaded walk, and a Christian Yelich infield single. Josh Hader closed things down in the 9th, giving the Brewers a 6-3 win.
The second game of the series saw the Braves eke out a 3-2 win. The Brewers’ bats went cold in the clutch, finishing 1-for-3 with runners in scoring position. Corbin Burnes put forth a solid effort, providing six innings, allowing two runs (one earned), and striking out eight. Unfortunately, it was not enough to secure a win.
Game 3 was a tough one. Aaron Ashby got the start, but struggled with his command. Ashby allowed six runs on six hits and four walks, only working four innings. The Brewers bats remained cold, recording only four hits and another poor effort with runners in scoring position (1-for-6) leading to a 9-2 loss.
Sometimes baseball can be cruel. This weekend was an example of that. The Brewers will look to right the ship with three more games against the 5-23 Reds.
