Brewers buck losing trend with sweep of Rays, crunch series with the Cardinals next, prospects excelling in the minors
A huge matchup with the St. Louis Cardinals? It's crunch time baseball, friends.
Are the Milwaukee Brewers back? It’s too early to tell, but they did what they needed to do in their two-game series against the Tampa Bay Rays. Two games, two wins? That’s a job well done.
Tuesday’s 5-3 win saw another solid performance by Freddy Peralta and a huge go-ahead hit from Andrew McCutchen in the 5th inning. Kolten Wong would add some insurance with a double that scored a pair of runs and a three up/three down 9th inning from Matt Bush secured the win.
Wednesday’s afternoon affair was a little more dramatic. The Brewers found themselves down 3-2 in the bottom of the 9th inning, but a Rowdy Tellez solo homer sent things to the Manfred Ball 10th inning. After some stellar defensive work in the top half of the 10th, a Willy Adames single gave The Crew a much needed 4-3 victory.
Adam and Andrew recap the important series sweep, talk prospects, and look ahead to the huge week in front of us.
Master Brewer Leaderboard (through 110 games)
(The Master Brewer Leaderboard is a season-long leaderboard tracking and ranking exceptional performances from Brewers players in the form of Master Brew Points 🍺, which at the end of the season will tally up to crown our Crewsing for a Brewsing Player of the Year.)
Rowdy Tellez 🍺
Rowdy has collected points for consistent production, but this week he gets his beer for coming up clutch in big moments. His homer in the 9th inning of Game 2 sent the game into extra innings and his heads up defensive play in the 10th helped the Brewers cut down a Rays runner at third base. That would prove to be vital, as the Rays would fail to score and Willy Adames walked things off in the bottom half of the 10th.
Willy Adames 🍺
The aforementioned Willy Adames reached base three times in Game 1 of this two-game series (two hits and one walk). In Wednesday’s afternoon finale Willy turned around a tough day by winning the game with a 10th inning RBI single.
Andrew McCutchen 🍺
This was another reliable series from Cutch. He finished the two games 3-for-7 with a walk, two doubles, two runs, and two RBI. In Tuesday’s game his first inning double gave the Brewers their first lead and his second double in the 5th inning gave them a lead they would not relinquish.
Tyrone Taylor🍺
A 1-for-8 batting line may not seem beer-worthy, but when you combine it with elite defense it all adds up. Taylor drove in a run in Game 1 and also robbed David Peralta of a homer with a leaping catch at the centerfield wall. He also showcased his speed on the base-paths while scoring from second on the Willy Adames walk-off single.
Trevor Gott 🍺
Trevor Gott pitched scoreless innings on back to back nights to help the Brewers to their sweep. Wednesday’s outing was particularly important. His spotless 9th inning kept the deficit at one run so Rowdy Tellez was able to send things to extra innings with his solo homer.
Matt Bush 🍺
Matt Bush provided his best performance in his short Brewers tenure this series. Bush looked fantastic on Tuesday, pitching one inning with a pair of strikeouts as he recorded his second save of the season.
