Brewers best the Yankees, keeping hopes alive of a late playoff run
No time to catch our breath just yet, hold on a little longer.
We love the Milwaukee Brewers because they always keep us guessing, right? Will they get swept by the Pittsburgh Pirates? Yes, and that’s frustrating, but they’ll also figure out a way to take two out of the three games from the New York Yankees. How can you not be romantic about baseball?
Garrett Mitchell provided the fireworks on Friday night. In the bottom of the ninth inning, with two outs and the bases loaded, Mitchell stepped to the plate with a chance to give the Brewers a walk-off win. That’s exactly what he’d do, sending a single up the middle to give The Crew a 7-6 comeback win.
Brandon Woodruff’s dominant start on Saturday secured the series win, while the Yankees were able to salvage a game on Sunday thanks to their powerful offense. Next up, Milwaukee has three games against the NL East leading New York Mets.
Adam and Andrew start to get wistful about the end of the season and Andrew makes fun of Gerrit Cole because why wouldn’t he?
Master Brewer Leaderboard (through 146 games)
(The Master Brewer Leaderboard is a season-long leaderboard tracking and ranking exceptional performances from Brewers players in the form of Master Brew Points 🍺, which at the end of the season will tally up to crown our Crewsing for a Brewsing Player of the Year.)
Brandon Woodruff 🍺 🍺
It’s a two beer day for Milwaukee’s co-ace! Woodruff delivered an outstanding eight innings pitched with just one run allowed and 10 strikeouts. He combined with Devin Williams to completely dominate the Yankees offense on Saturday, leading to a 4-1 Brew Crew victory.
Willy Adames 🍺
Willy Adames has been on a tear for the last month, playing his best baseball of the season. Against the Yankees, Adames finished the series 5-for-11 with three walks, two homers, two doubles, five runs scored, and seven RBI. We proclaim this month “The September of Willy Adames”.
Christian Yelich 🍺
Christian Yelich had an under the radar, yet productive, series against the Yankees. Yeli finished 4-for-12 with two walks, one double, three runs scored, and one RBI. His .362 OBP still leads all qualified hitters on the team.
Garrett Mitchell 🍺
Mitchell has struggled with the bat for the most part during his brief MLB stint, but he has shown a knack for performing in big moments. His 3-for-6 series was obviously highlighted by his game-winning single, but he also showcased his speed on the base paths on Saturday.
Devin Williams 🍺
The aforementioned Devin Williams was at his dominant best this weekend. He provided a scoreless 8th inning on Friday and secured his 13th save of the season with a scoreless 9th inning on Saturday. Both efforts came in Milwaukee victories.
