Brewers best the Orioles in impressive series win, Joey Wiemer and his mullet take centerstage
Corbin Burnes and Joey Wiemer take a bow!
I have no bad things to say about the city of Baltimore. Crab Cakes are awesome. That being said, I was happy to see the Milwaukee Brewers take two of three games from the Baltimore Orioles this week.
The Brewers won in dramatic fashion on Tuesday thanks to a Joey Wiemer walk-off single. They followed that up with a dominant 10-2 victory that was highlighted by Corbin Burnes’ eight scoreless innings and Wiemer’s 4-for-4 day at the plate. The Crew let Thursday’s series finale slip away in the late innings, but you can’t be mad about a series win and five wins in their last seven games.
Next up for the Brewers is a date with the Oakland Athletics. The Athletics have struggled mightily this season, but they just took two out of three games from the Pittsburgh Pirates, so anything is possible.
Master Brewer Leaderboard (through 63 games)
(The Master Brewer Leaderboard is a season-long leaderboard tracking and ranking exceptional performances from Brewers players in the form of Master Brew Points 🍺, which at the end of the season will tally up to crown our Crewsing for a Brewsing Player of the Year.)
Joey Wiemer🍺 🍺🍺
Joey Wiemer did it all this week. Wiemer played his usual stellar defense in center field, he had a walk-off single, and he had a 4-for-4 day with a pair of homers. That’ll earn a man several beers.
Corbin Burnes 🍺 🍺
The Brewers got the Cy Young winning version of Corbin Burnes on Wednesday night and it was a sight to behold. Burnes pitched eight innings with no walks, just two hits allowed, no runs, and nine strikeouts. If we see this Burnes more often then the NL Central is in trouble.
Colin Rea 🍺
It was another turn in the rotation for Colin Rea and it was another start where he did his job to near perfection. Rea pitched five innings of scoreless baseball, surprising and delighting fans by striking out eight Orioles.
Devin Williams 🍺
If the Brewers had seen more of Devin Williams in this series it might have been a sweep. Williams continued to do his job in his limited opportunity. His scoreless 9th inning sent the game on Tuesday to extra innings, where the Brewers would eventually secure the win on a Joey Wiemer walk-off single.
Willy Adames🍺
Welcome back to the lineup! Willy Adames made his return to the Brewers following his scary foul ball to the face a little more than a week ago, and he made an impact right away. He homered in his first at-bat back on Wednesday, in what would turn into 3-for-9 effort across two games. He also made a handful of outstanding plays at shortstop.
Victor Caratini 🍺
Single game Victor Caratini is back in the brewery. Victor finished Wednesday’s game 2-for-2 with one run and one RBI. He also was behind the plate for Corbin Burnes’ gem of a performance. That has to count for something, right?
Brice Turang🍺
Brice Turang was optioned to Nashville to make room for Willy Adames, but he exited in style. Turang finished Tuesday’s game 2-for-4 with a walk, a triple, and an RBI. That RBI was particularly important, as it tied the game at 3-3 in the 8th inning. We hope Brice can find his swing in Nashville and make a swift return to Milwaukee.
Elvis Peguero 🍺
Add two more scoreless innings to Elvis Peguero’s account. He continues to be the most valuable piece of the Hunter Renfroe trade. Peguero now has a 2.49 ERA in 21.2 innings.
Christian Yelich 🍺
The opposite field doubles came with regularity for Christian Yelich in this series. Overall his batting line was 5-for-12 with two walks, three doubles, and two runs scored. Yelich has yet to recapture the magic of his dominant series against the Kansas City Royals, but if he can produce like he did against Baltimore the Brewers will take it.
Brian Anderson 🍺
It was a solid series for one of Milwaukee’s Brian Andersons (also, happy late birthday to the other Brian Anderson). Anderson ended his series against the Orioles 4-for-12 with one walk, two runs scored, and two RBI.
William Contreras 🍺
Baseball Bill had a nice series at the plate. Against the Orioles, Contreras went 4-for-10 with a walk, a double, and two runs scored. His pitch framing also looked particularly exceptional during Colin Rea’s start.
