Welcome to our brand new Substack! I hope you’ve already subscribed to make sure you never miss one of these, but if you haven’t, let me give you a quick rundown as to some of the reasons why you may want to hit that button right now.
Since Gyro Step and Win in 6 joined forces just before the playoffs (undoubtedly spurring the Bucks on to their first championship in 50 years), we’ve been working to figure out how we can offer the best and most varied range of Bucks coverage out there.
Podcasts are the absolute core of what we do and that’s not going to change. But the type of podcasts we’re going to be making will be a little different. There’ll still be our usual coverage and discussion of all the biggest news and events, and post-game reactions to key games throughout the season, but you should also expect more interviews, more themed series, more fun and games (maybe in a more literal sense than you’re imagining), and the introduction of GSPN narrative podcasts and longer form series.
As you may already have noticed, we’ve been dipping our toe into the world of video more and more too, and that’s going to continue. If you’re subscribed to our YouTube, you were probably following along with a lot of our live pre-game shows throughout the playoffs, you’ve probably seen the video versions of quite a few of our podcast episodes, and you’ve also seen Ti Windisch’s controversial retired jersey takes pivot to video too. Expect more of all of that, but we’ll have even more content tailored especially for YouTube too.
And then there’s Substack! All four of us started out as bloggers, and this will give us the opportunity to dip our toes in those waters again. Jordan has already come out of his short-lived retirement (wearing the 4-5) to talk about Bud’s extension, and from now on when any of us have any extended Bucks thoughts that we want to work out, you may well see articles drop here where we navigate through them. Beyond that, Substack will also be a hub for GSPN, though. As we continue to branch out and post different types of media in different places, this is the spot where you can stay in the loop and make sure you don’t miss anything from GSPN. It’s also where we’ll continue to pull back the curtain, let you in on some of our works in progress, share behind the scenes photos, and look for all of your thoughts and feedback.
It’s going to be great. But if you still need convincing…let me bring you into the lab. Here’s what we’ve got coming up over the next few days, weeks, months and, yes, even the next year:
This Week
If you haven’t caught it already, the whole crew sat down with Mirin Fader, The New York Times Bestselling author of Giannis: The Improbable Rise of an NBA MVP, for the first ever GSPN book club. Watch it on YouTube or listen wherever you get your podcasts.
It may not be a 20-25 year deal, but Mike Budenholzer has signed a 3-year extension to remain with the Bucks! Extended reaction and analysis of that news will be coming to YouTube and your pod feeds in the next couple of days.
Next Week
Rohan is officially on the market and looking for TV hosting gigs (that’s what years of working alongside Big Time Ti will do to a man). So none of us really should have been surprised when he came up with an absolutely inspired idea that can also double as his audition for one of the most coveted jobs in television. That’s right. Next week on our YouTube channel, with the questions (or should I say answers) that he’s been working night and day on putting together, Rohan will be hosting Jeopardy!*
*That’s GSPN Jeopardy! Bucks edition, not in any way affiliated with the TV show. Crap, will we need to change the name to something Bucks-related that sounds similar for legal reasons? If you see something called Joeprunty! appear next week, you now know what it is.
September
On Win in 6 throughout the month of September, Jordan and I are going to talk with Bucks fans, former guests, long-time friends of the show, and maybe even one breakout local news sensation (at least for us) over a series of interviews. We want to continue to savor the championship moment, so we’ll ask each of them about the individual journeys that make up their Bucks fandom, the players they’ve loved over the years, the highs and the lows, and just what it was like to watch their team go on that magical playoff run and finally win it all once again.
Speaking of series, the whole GSPN crew will be involved in a part narrative/part discussion series where we shine the spotlight on eight key figures from the Bucks’ 2021 championship run. This won’t just be about the numbers or moments that mattered from last season, but an attempt to put the monumental achievement of winning a ring into context within the individual careers that brought everyone to that spot in Milwaukee in the first place. Expect the first episode to drop in late September and for the rollout to continue episode by episode toward the start of the season.
2022
Last, but definitely not least. You’re probably thinking, “2022?! What could these guys possibly be working on that will take that long to finish?” Well, as I teased on Twitter a few weeks ago, Jordan and I have started work on what’s easily the biggest and most ambitious project we’ve ever attempted. Having managed a website together for years, we’re no strangers to projects that last a month or a couple of months, but the scope of this blows that out of the water entirely. More specific details will follow in the future, and this will become a place where we’ll share all kinds of glimpses into the process and a lot of the cool materials we’ve come across and details we’ve uncovered. But for now, here’s a very vague announcement: We’re making a long-form, narrative, documentary podcast series on a specific era of Milwaukee Bucks’ history. We’re currently deep in research for our first couple of episodes and we’ve uncovered so much gold that it’s a real challenge not to just spill the beans right now or post snippets every day on Twitter. We know the challenge ahead of us to actually pull this off, but we’re really excited to take it on and quietly confident we’re up to that challenge. That’s all I’m going to say for now. Let’s hope that we’ll have something really great for you all to enjoy next year.
